MONCTON, New Brunswick (AP) – Patrice Bergeron, Tom Fitzgerald, Ben Walter and Brad Boyes scored third-period goals in the Boston Bruins’ 5-2 exhibition victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday night.

Pat Leahy also scored and Finnish rookie Hannu Toivonen made 39 saves for the Bruins (3-3-1), coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to the Canadiens on Tuesday night in Montreal.

“Hannu was terrific,” Boston coach Mike Sullivan said. “He came up with the kind of saves that lifts teams. Many of his saves were timely and that’s what a goaltender job is all about.”

Michael Ryder and Mike Ribeiro scored for the Canadiens (4-2-0).

“We found out tonight how important and how crucial momentum swings can be,” Montreal captain Saku Koivu said. “I thought we were playing very well.

“We were doing a lot of positive things but then we lost the puck two times in our zone and things swung their way. You can’t afford to give teams momentum.”

Montreal won the shootout following the game 2-1 on goals by Ryder and Alex Kovalev. Glen Murray scored for the Bruins.

Boston played without captain Joe Thornton.
