MONTREAL – Orlando Cabrera hit a two-run homer with one out in the ninth inning, giving the Montreal Expos a 4-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.
Cabrera connected off Jon Garland (5-4) for his fourth homer of the season – his first since May 2 – after Jose Vidro’s one-out double.
It was Montreal’s first game-winning homer since last Aug. 16 when Brad Wilkerson hit a grand slam off San Francisco’s Todd Worrell for a 4-2 win over the Giants.
Garland, who retired the first 16 batters he faced, pitched his second career complete game and first of the season.
Vidro hit a two-run single in the sixth to put Montreal up 2-1, the Expos’ only hit through the first eight innings.
Montreal, which had a season-high 18 hits and 17 runs one night earlier, won its second in a row following a seven-game losing streak. The two teams combined for 33 hits Saturday in the Expos’ 17-14 win.
Jose Valentin had three hits for Chicago, including a tying solo shot off Zach Day in the seventh for his 12th homer.
Chad Cordero (2-1) pitched a perfect ninth.
Day followed up his worst outing of the season with a strong performance, allowing eight hits and two runs – one earned – in eight innings.
Garland was perfect until he walked Endy Chavez with one out in the sixth.
Chavez advanced on Zach Day’s sacrifice before Garland walked Wilkerson and pinch-hitter Terrmel Sledge to load the bases.
Vidro then hit a two-run single to put Montreal up 2-1 and break up Garland’s no-hit bid as Wilkerson slid home safely with the go-ahead run ahead of center fielder Aaron Rowand’s throw to the plate.
Expos first baseman Nick Johnson was in the right place to complete a crisp unassisted double play to end the sixth. Johnson jumped to catch Carlos Lee’s check-swing soft liner and landed on first just before Frank Thomas returned to the base.
Chicago opened the scoring in the second as Valentin scored on a double play grounder. Valentin and Rowand hit leadoff singles, with Valentin advancing to third on Vidro’s error as he tried to scoop Rowand’s bunt attempt to first.
Notes: Garland threw 70 of 110 pitches for strikes, and 72 of Day’s 107 pitches were strikes. … The Expos turned three double plays in the game.
