SEATTLE – Ray Allen scored 22 points and Vitaly Potapenko added a season-high 21, leading the Seattle SuperSonics to a 84-57 win over the lowly Orlando Magic on Sunday night.
Rashard Lewis had 18 points and Vladimir Radmanovic 12 as the Sonics won their season-high fifth straight, though it’s coming too late to help make a push for the playoffs.
Brent Barry went scoreless but had a season-high 12 assists, and Reggie Evans matched a season-high with 10 rebounds despite sitting out the fourth quarter.
Juwan Howard led the Magic with 20 points and nine rebounds, while reserve Drew Gooden scored 17, but Orlando went without a field goal for seven minutes in the second half.
It was the 17th straight road loss for the Magic against the Western Conference.
The Sonics returned home after a 4-1 road trip. Seattle’s last loss came March 12 at Miami, a low point where the Sonics had only eight first-quarter points and 25 at halftime.
Orlando lost its fifth straight and played again without Tracy McGrady. He’s attending his great-grandmother’s funeral, and the Magic aren’t likely to improve the NBA’s worst record at 19-53 without him.
The Sonics led by 16 points early in the second quarter and 50-39 at halftime, but Orlando rallied in the third. Howard scored six points in an 11-5 run that cut the margin to 55-50.
Lewis scored the next seven points for Seattle, with Barry giving him several outstanding feeds. He found Lewis for an alley-oop that gave the Sonics a 62-52 lead with three minutes left in the third.
That’s when the Magic went flat offensively, going without a field goal from Gooden’s jumper with 1:07 remaining in the third until he tipped in a missed shot with 6:17 to play.
DeShawn Stevenson made two free throws early in the fourth, but that was the extent of Orlando’s scoring through the first six minutes of the final period.
The Sonics slowly stretched the lead to 75-58. Radmanovic hit a 3-pointer and put down a dunk as Seattle opened the fourth quarter with an 11-2 run, then coasted the rest of the way.
Notes: Barry left early in the second period when trainers checked a strained middle finger on his left hand. He returned midway through the quarter. … The Magic have been assured a losing record since Feb. 17. Orlando has had three losing streaks of at least six games. … The teams have split their last 16 meetings. … Until Sunday, Seattle’s last homecourt win Feb. 22 over Boston.
