BUFFALO, N.Y. – Tomas Kaberle’s goal with 1:15 remaining in overtime capped a stirring comeback for the Toronto Maple Leafs as they defeated the Buffalo Sabres 6-5.
Alexander Mogilny had three assists, including his 1,000th NHL point, and Mats Sundin and Owen Nolan both scored twice to help Toronto snap a two-game losing streak.
With Toronto goaltender Trevor Kidd pulled for an extra attacker, Mogilny wristed a shot that Gary Roberts deflected past Martin Biron for his 26 goal of the season with 37.2 seconds remaining in regulation to tie it.
Thrashers 1, Hurricanes 0
ATLANTA – Dany Heatley’s backhander from the right side of the crease beat goaltender Kevin Weekes with 3:17 left in overtime, giving the Atlanta Thrashers a 1-0 victory Monday night over the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Thrashers kept alive their slim Eastern Conference playoff hopes. Atlanta is in 11th place, eight points behind the idle New York Islanders, who hold the eighth and final spot.
Ilya Kovalchuk was against the left boards when he passed to Heatley, who was skating backward, at the bottom of the right circle. Heatley beat Weekes by punching the puck just inside the right post.
Heatley got his 10th point in 11 games, including five goals, for the Thrashers. Pasi Nurminen (25-26-6) stopped 31 shots, including two in overtime.
Devils 3, Rangers 1
NEW YORK – Patrik Elias scored his eighth game-winning goal of the season to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 3-1 victory Monday night over the New York Rangers.
Martin Brodeur was forced to make just 16 saves in his 65th consecutive start against New York.
Rangers goaltender Mike Dunham played well in defeat, especially in the first period when he stopped 15 shots and held off the Devils during two-man advantage that lasted 51 seconds. New Jersey has converted just three of its last 35 power plays.
Jan Hrdina and Jay Pandolfo also scored for the Devils. Jozef Balej had his first NHL goal for the Rangers, now within five points of elimination from playoff contention.
