DENVER (AP) – Slash is back, at least for one game.

Kordell Stewart scored on a 1-yard run after replacing Chris Chandler, and Paul Edinger kicked four field goals, leading the Bears to a surprising 19-10 win over the Denver Broncos on Sunday.

Chicago (4-7) had 217 total yards coming off consecutive two-point losses, but benefited from good field position and two pass interference penalties against Denver’s Lenny Walls. The Bears’ average starting position was the 38-yard line, while the start of Denver’s drives averaged the 19.

Denver (6-5) clicked last week against San Diego with the return of Jake Plummer, but Clinton Portis was the only one who managed to do much this time. He finished with 165 yards on 14 carries for his second straight 1,000-yard season.

Plummer, who missed four games with foot and shoulder injuries, was 19-for-35 for 176 yards. He had several passes swatted down and was even booed by the home fans after trying to force a pass into double coverage in the fourth quarter.

Denver took a 10-9 lead on a 25-yard field goal by Jason Elam early in the fourth quarter, set up by Portis’ 49-yard run off right tackle.

Stewart, taking over after Chandler sprained his shoulder at the end of the first half, answered with a 1-yard dive.

early in the fourth quarter to put the Bears up 16-10. Stewart was hit just as he started his jump, but still squeezed in on fourth down after Chicago failed on two tries from inside the 1.

He finished 7-for-15 for 47 yards passing and ran for 29 yards in his first game since being replaced as the starter in Week 6.

Edinger added a 47-yard field goal with just under nine minutes left, capping a short drive that Walls kept alive with a 21-yard pass interference penalty on third down.

Denver was set up for a 40-yard field goal with four minutes left, but holder Micah Knorr dropped the snap and his pass fell incomplete. Knorr also contributed to Chicago’s good field position, averaging 38 yards on five punts on a frigid day.

The Broncos rolled up 448 yards last week against San Diego and seemed like they were going to keep it going against the Bears. Denver moved 78 yards in 12 plays on its first drive, capped by Rod Smith’s diving 1-yard touchdown. Portis followed with a 59-yard run midway through the second quarter, but Elam pushed a 40-yard field goal wide right.

Portis had 97 yards on nine carries in the first half, but the rest of the Broncos combined for 85 yards in 18 plays.

The Bears were even worse – 117 total yards – but led 9-7 at halftime after Edinger kicked two field goals in the final 1:57.

The first, from 23 yards, was set up by a 45-yard pass interference penalty on Walls. Chicago was set to go for it on fourth-and-inches six plays later, but Terrance Metcalf was called for a false start.

Edinger added a 54-yarder with three seconds left after Chicago got the ball back at its 34. He also hit from 33 yards on Chicago’s second drive of the game.
