NEW YORK – Bernie Williams gave Yankees fans a pair of reasons to celebrate his 35th birthday.

Williams homered twice in a game for the first time in more than a year and Ruben Sierra added a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning as the Yankees beat Tampa Bay 6-5 in the opener of a day-night doubleheader. Sierra then drove in three runs as New York won 6-3 to complete the sweep.

Mike Mussina (17-7) got his 199th win in the nightcap – matching teammate David Wells – and improved to 11-3 career against the Devil Rays. Mariano Rivera saved both games.

Brewers 5, Giants 4

SAN FRANCISCO – Richie Sexson hit a pair of two-run homers and the Milwaukee Brewers snapped a seven-game losing streak to San Francisco by beating the Giants 5-4 Saturday despite Barry Bonds’ 654th homer.

Bonds hit the first pitch from Doug Davis an estimated 482 feet to spark a four-run eighth inning, his 41st homer of the year and 27th career splash hit into McCovey Cove. Bonds is six home runs shy of tying his godfather, Willie Mays, for third place on baseball’s career list.

Marlins 8, Braves 3

MIAMI – The Florida Marlins drew their biggest crowd in more than two years – and quickly gave the fans plenty to cheer about.

Miguel Cabrera capped a six-run first inning with a three-run homer, and the NL wild-card leaders won their seventh consecutive game by beating the Atlanta Braves 8-3 Saturday night.

The Marlins’ bid for their first playoff berth since 1997 attracted a crowd of 40,414, their largest since July 13, 2001, against the New York Yankees.

Blue Jays 6, Orioles 1

TORONTO – Greg Myers became the second catcher in Blue Jays history to hit an inside-the-park home run, and Toronto won its fourth straight with a 6-1 victory Saturday over the Baltimore Orioles.

Myers also homered over the left-field fence, becoming the fourth Blue Jays player to have a multihomer game that included an inside-the-park home run.

Royals 7, Tigers 0

DETROIT – Jamey Wright threw a seven-hit shutout to win for the first time in almost a year and Carlos Beltran drove in three runs to lead the Kansas City Royals past the Detroit Tigers 7-0 Saturday night.

Detroit (38-109) tied a franchise record with its 109th loss, originally set in 1996, and are the most losses in the majors since then.

Pirates 5, Phillies 3

PITTSBURGH – Abraham Nunez’s two-run double in the second inning helped the Pittsburgh Pirates open a five-run lead, and they held on to hand Philadelphia a 5-3 loss Saturday night that damaged the Phillies’ wild-card chances.

Astros 2, Cardinals 0

HOUSTON – Jeff Bagwell hit his 35th homer and Roy Oswalt won his second straight game since coming off the disabled list as the Houston Astros beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 Saturday night.

The victory preserved the Astros’ one-game lead in the NL Central over the Chicago

Cubs.

, 9-6 winners over the Cincinnati Reds. St. Louis lost for the fourth time in five games and dropped 4 off the pace.

Oswalt (8-5) came off the disabled list Sept. 8 and won his first start at Milwaukee. He was even sharper against the Cardinals, allowing four hits over seven innings to win a pitching duel with Matt Morris.

Octavio Dotel pitched a perfect eighth in his first appearance since straining his left gluteus Sept. 6.

Billy Wagner finished the five-hitter for his 42nd save in 45 chances and 20th in a row. He got Albert Pujols to ground into a double play and struck out Scott Rolen on three pitches to end it.

Oswalt didn’t allow a hit until Rolen’s ground-rule double down the third-base line with two outs in the fourth inning. Edgar Renteria then smashed a grounder to shortstop Adam Everett, who made a diving catch and threw out Renteria for the third out.

Singles by J.D. Drew in the third, Chris Widger in the fifth and Fernando Vina in the sixth were the only other hits off Oswalt, who has been on the disabled list three times this season with groin injuries.

Oswalt threw 94 pitches. He struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter.

Morris (10-7) entered with a career-high 20-inning scoreless streak and extended it to 23 before Bagwell homered in the fourth for his second in two games.

The homer gave Houston a 1-0 lead and moved Bagwell into a tie with Chicago White Sox slugger Frank Thomas for 33rd on the career list with 415. Craig Biggio added an RBI double in the fifth.

Morris pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and two runs. He struck out five and walked one.

Cardinals catcher Mike Matheny was ejected by plate umpire Jerry Crawford as St. Louis took the field for the third inning. Moments later, Crawford pointed to the Cardinals dugout and tossed pitching coach Dave Duncan.

Notes: St. Louis 1B Tino Martinez needs two home runs to reach 300 for his career. … Pujols went 0-for-4, ending his 10-game hitting streak. He has nine streaks of 10 or more games in his career.
