CLEVELAND (AP) – Swin Cash’s basket with 4.7 seconds left gave the Detroit Shock its first WNBA playoff win, a 76-74 victory Friday night in their series opener with the Cleveland Rockers.

With Detroit down one, Cash grabbed a long rebound on the weak side and scored to match her career-high with 26 points.

Cash then helped seal the win on the defensive end by knocking an inbounds pass off Deanna Jackson’s knee to force a backcourt violation with 2.4 seconds to play.

Elaine Powell’s free throw made it 76-74, and Cleveland’s Helen Darling was way off with a 3-pointer before the buzzer.

The Shock, who had the league’s best record (25-9) in the regular season, was playing in only its second playoff game and first since 1999.

Deanna Nolan added 13 points and Ruth Riley had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Shock, who can close out the best-of-three series with a win in Game 2 on Sunday in Detroit.

Chasity Melvin had 21 points and Penny Taylor added 17 for the Rockers, who went 0-4 against Detroit during the regular season and couldn’t put away the Shock when they had the chance.

Cleveland shot just 6-of-27 in the second half, missing several layups.

The Rockers rallied from six points down in the closing minutes, and took a 74-73 lead with 28 seconds remaining on two free throws by Melvin.

Detroit coach Bill Laimbeer called two timeouts to set up a final shot, but Riley missed a 10-footer with 9 seconds to go. She got her own rebound, and misfired long on that, too.

However, the Rockers somehow forgot to box out Cash, who came in untouched, grabbed the rebound and put it in for the game-winner.

Detroit led 46-44 following the highest scoring first half in WNBA playoff history.

By making nearly 60 percent of their shots and outhustling the Shock to every loose ball, the Rockers built a 31-22 lead midway through the first half.

But Cash, who scored in double figures in all but one game this season, converted a three-point play and Riley made two free throws to cap a 9-0 run.

that tied it.

Kedra Holland-Corn’s 3-pointer gave the Shock their first lead with 1:29 remaining, and after Betty Lennox scored for Cleveland, Riley’s basket put Detroit up by two at halftime.

Notes: Carlos Boozer and Darius Miles of the Cleveland Cavaliers had courtside seats. … The Rockers are making their fourth playoff appearance. … Detroit and Cleveland have the two youngest rosters in the WNBA.
