BARCELONA, Spain (AP) – Ian Crocker was so flabbergasted by setting a world record in the 100-meter butterfly – and beating fellow American Michael Phelps in the process – he could hardly talk about it afterward.

But as soon as he began chatting about his life away from swimming, the 20-year-old from Portland, Maine, opened up.

Crocker loves classic American cars of the 1960s and 1970s, plays the electric guitar and can’t get enough of Bob Dylan music.

After picking up a gold medal in the Sydney Olympics in the 400 medley relay, Crocker returned home and spent $8,000 on a 1971 red Buick Riviera. His other dream car – not yet purchased – is a 1965 Chevrolet Impala.

Crocker, who stars at Texas and had never set a world record before, swam Saturday’s race in 50.98 seconds, eclipsing the mark of 51.47 seconds that Phelps set in Friday’s semifinals.

American teammate Natalie Coughlin said Crocker thrived by being the underdog.

“I just think everybody’s eyes were on Michael, and with good reason,” she said.
