MIAMI (AP) – Jose Canseco will remain in jail until at least next month after a judge delayed a decision Monday on whether the former slugger violated probation and should go to prison for 15 years.
Judge Leonard Glick most likely will decide next month. Glick heard testimony Monday from Canseco’s probation officer about a test that officials say showed the ex-player used steroids while under house arrest.
The 1988 American League MVP has been in jail for nearly a month since testing positive for the muscle-building drug while serving house arrest for a 2001 Miami Beach nightclub scuffle with two tourists.
Canseco, 39, pleaded guilty to felony aggravated battery and spent 30 days in jail for violating probation early this year by traveling to California to try to resolve a custody dispute when he was supposed to be in Florida meeting his probation officer.
While denying that Canseco used steroids while under house arrest, his attorneys acknowledged this month that he has a history of steroid abuse and asked to have him released from jail for an addiction evaluation.
Canseco, who retired from baseball last year, was placed on probation for three years, but house arrest was added after the initial violation. The judge warned him then that he risked spending the maximum sentence in state prison if he got in trouble again.
Canseco was charged with his twin brother Ozzie in the club fight. Ozzie Canseco, who had a brief major league career, faced a separate probation violation hearing Monday before Glick for a steroid possession arrest in May. That hearing was postponed because of a scheduling conflict.
Canseco hit 462 home runs during his 17-year major league career. He helped lead the Oakland Athletics to three straight World Series appearances from 1988-90.
