Livan Hernandez goes the distance and scatters seven hits for the victory.

MONTREAL – Livan Hernandez pitched his second complete game of the year and Brian Schneider’s two-run double keyed a five-run fourth inning as the Montreal Expos beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-1 Monday night.

Phillies manager Larry Bowa was ejected during a wild fourth inning in which benches cleared after Brandon Duckworth (3-3) hit Hernandez with a pitch.

Hernandez appeared to follow through with a swing as the ball hit the upper part of his right arm. Plate umpire Bill Welke immediately pointed to first base. Hernandez shouted at Duckworth, who motioned that Hernandez had swung at the pitch. Players came out of the dugouts and congregated along the first-base line, but no punches were thrown.

Hernandez (8-6) scattered seven hits for his 25th complete game, allowing Jimmy Rollins’ one-out homer in the first. He threw 124 pitches – 83 strikes – and had a season-high 10 strikeouts.

Cubs 6, Marlins 3

CHICAGO – Pitcher Matt Clement hit a tie-breaking two-run double as the Chicago Cubs scored three runs in the fourth inning and beat the Florida Marlins 6-3.

Chicago was without center fielder Corey Patterson, who went on the 15-day disabled list before the game with a torn ligament in his left knee. He is expected to miss the rest of the season.

With two outs in the fourth and Hee Seop Choi on second, Marlins manager Jack McKeon had starter Josh Beckett (3-4) intentionally walk Paul Bako to get to Clement. The Chicago right-hander, who improved to 5-1 in eight career starts against his former team, hit the first pitch down the right-field line to score Choi and Bako, putting the Cubs ahead 5-3.

Clement scored on Ramon Martinez’s single later in the inning to complete the scoring.

Clement (6-7) allowed three runs on five hits in 6 1-3 innings, striking out six and walking two.

Braves 7, Mets 3

NEW YORK – Chipper Jones homered twice for the second straight day, and Horacio Ramirez pitched the first complete game of his major league career as the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets 7-3.

Jones hit a three-run homer in the first inning and added a solo shot in the eighth for his 28th multihomer game. He hit two home runs in the Braves’ 7-5 win over the Montreal Expos on Sunday for his first multihomer game this season.

Ramirez (8-2), making his 15th career start, gave up one earned run and four hits in winning his seventh consecutive decision since losing to Florida on April 11. He struck out seven and walked two.

The only trouble he ran into caAtlanta was in control from the start, getting three runs in the first off Jae Seo (5-5). Giles and Gary Sheffield both had one-out singles before Jones drove a 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall for his 16th homer, giving Atlanta a 3-0 lead.

Brewers 9, Pirates 2

MILWAUKEE – Wayne Franklin took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, and Milwaukee pitchers allowed only four hits overall as the Brewers beat Pittsburgh 9-2 to snap the Pirates’ four-game winning streak.

Franklin (5-5) didn’t give up a hit until Jeff Reboulet tripled to center field to open the sixth. Franklin was pulled for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the inning after yielding one run on two hits and three walks. He struck out five.

The Brewers are 10-1 in Franklin’s last 11 starts. Franklin is 4-1 with six no decisions and a 3.26 ERA since May 16.

Kip Wells’ winless streak stretched to six starts for the Pirates. Wells (2-4), who hasn’t won since May 31, allowed seven runs – six earned – on seven hits in 5 2-3 innings.

Astros 7, Reds 1

HOUSTON – Roy Oswalt shut down the Reds, and Richard Hidalgo backed him with a three-run double as the Houston Astros beat Cincinnati 7-1.

Oswalt (5-4) was making his first start since leaving a game against the New York Yankees on June 11 after the first inning because of a strained right groin.

Oswalt allowed one run and three hits in six innings, struck out three and walked one. He is 7-0 with a 1.56 ERA in 10 starts against the Reds, and has more wins against Cincinnati than any other team.

He was limited to 74 pitches because it was his first start in nearly a month, and he threw 50 for strikes.

Houston stopped a three-game losing streak and sent the Reds to their fifth straight loss, matching their season high. Cincinnati was held to four hits by Oswalt, Ricky Stone and Billy Wagner.

Ryan Dempster (2-6), making his second career start on three days’ rest, gave up six runs and seven hits in four innings.

He also lost on short rest to San Francisco on May 4.

All-Star Aaron Boone put the Reds ahead with an RBI single in the first, but Houston took a 4-1 lead in the third when Jeff Bagwell singled home a run and Hidalgo followed with a double to left-center.

Houston’s Eric Bruntlett hit his first major league homer in the fourth, a two-run drive. Bruntlett played because shortstop Adam Everett sustained a mild concussion when hit by a grounder during warmups.
