Drifts from seven to ten feet Friday were blown into the track of the Lewiston, Augusta & Waterville street railway on the Waterville division, stated the officials of that road Saturday. A big rotary snowplow with a crew of 23 men with shovels was breaking the line thru to Sabatis Sunday afternoon, and the management hoped that thru service with Augusta would be resumed by late afternoon
50 years ago, 1968
Harold (Harry) Olum, sports writer for The Lewiston Daily Sun, is Maine’s Sportswriter of the Year, a nationally-recognized honor voted by sportswriters and sportscasters of the Pine Tree State. Olum, a veteran of the profession who studied at both Bates College and Syracuse University, was chosen by his colleagues in secret ballot. Considered one of the top newspaper authorities on basketball and harness racing, he is an Auburn resident.

Regardless of which one of the two school funding proposals now being considered by the Legislature is finally adopted, Lewiston’s subsidy next year will drop — and drop sharply. Auburn’s subsidy, meanwhile, will either slip slightly next year or swell by more than $250,000, depending on whether the Legislature accepts the recommendation of Gov. John R. McKernan or the plan proposed this week by the state’s Education Committee. “If you’re asking me which I prefer, I think it’s obvious the (Education Committee’s) proposal is the better one for us,” Auburn Mayor Richard Trafton said Wednesday.
