FARMINGTON – In celebration of the University of Maine at Farmington’s commitment to integration of the arts, UMF will host the 2009 Michael D. Wilson Symposium Arts Fortnight.
The two-week long series of arts events will be held at various venues from Thursday to Thursday, April 9 to 16, and will continue after the academic spring break from Tuesday to Sunday, April 28 to May 3.
Sponsored by UMF’s Department of Visual and Performing Arts and Ministry of Experimental Arts, the creative and collaborative spring arts festival will feature visual and performing arts presentations by UMF students, faculty, staff and community partners.
The arts gala is partially funded by a gift from Michael and Susan Angelides, Stonington, Conn., in honor of UMF alumnus Michael D. Wilson.
The events will include theater performances, musical and multimedia presentations, visual art displays and musical performances from cars to guitars.
Arts Fortnight events will include:
One-Act Theatre Festival: A student-directed and produced one-act theater festival. Admission: $7 adults, $4 seniors and children, free for UMF students with ID; 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 9 to Saturday, April 11; 2 p.m. Sunday, April 12; Alumni Theater.
Pixel Hunter Video and Animation Festival: A selection of time-based media created by UMF students, 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, April 13, Lincoln Auditorium.
Introduction to Theatre Student Projects: 10-minute student plays, 9:50 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, Alumni Theater.
Night of Minimalism: A program of minimalist musical works, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, Nordica Auditorium.
“Death of the Hired Man”: A student-directed play, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, April 15 and 16, Alumni Theater.
UMF Concert Band Spring Concert: Admission $6 adults, $5 seniors, free for UMF students with ID; 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16, Nordica Auditorium.
bob. The Senior Art Show: A showcase of student work that reflects an eclectic and dynamic display of student research, 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 16; gallery opening reception, with exhibit open throughout Arts Fortnight, UMF Art Gallery.
Introduction to Theatre Student Projects: Several 10-minute plays will be presented as reader’s theater, 9:50 a.m. Tuesday, April 28, Alumni Theater.
Michael D. Wilson Symposium Arts Night: An evening of eclectic programs in three locations, including, an original play, dance, experimental music visual and sound installations, 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, Art Gallery, Alumni Theater and Nordica Auditorium.
Incarnation for Automobile Orchestra: UMF’s third traffic jam session, featuring an orchestra of 50 to 60 automobiles. There will be two 20-minute performances, 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, High Street parking lot.
Passport: An electro-acoustic piece with accompanying light show, 9 p.m. Thursday, April 30, Nordica Auditorium.
Joshua Case, Senior Composition Recital: The concert will feature three musical works composed by Case, UMF student and 2008 Michael D. Wilson Research Scholar, 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, Nordica Auditorium.
UMF Community Chorus Spring Concerts: Admission $6 adults, $5 senior citizens, free for UMF students with ID; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 2; 3 p.m., Sunday, May 3; Old South Church.
