RUMFORD – The Rumford United Methodist Church will sponsor a week of activities at Club Can Do from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, Aug. 11 to 15, for children in kindergarten through preteen. The week is open to all children in the community and visiting children.

This year’s program, “Beach Party – Surfing through the Scriptures,” will feature such characters as Max the surfer, Sam the lifeguard and Flamay the flamingo.

Each day will start with an opening assembly, led by Pastor Kelly Harvell, and will continue with Bible stories, crafts, snacks, music, recreation and classes for the three age groups: lower elementary, middle-upper elementary and pre-teen.

Dee Holman, Jane Shuck, Harvell, Dot Wing, Peggy Welch, Martha Hanington and Judy Kuhn will lead the activities with help from Kathy Crump and other members of the congregation, who will read the Bible stories, lead the recreation and serve the snacks.

A new group is being formed this year consisting of pre-teen (or older) youth. They will be led by Harvell and will work on mission projects throughout the week. On Wednesday, Aug. 13, they will serve the cold drinks and the meals at the GRAMPS lunch site at the Mexico Town Hall.

The philosophy of Club Can Do is doing things for others and so the children will be asked to bring cans and bottles for redemption, an offering and packages or cans of unperishable food. The food will go to the local food pantry and the money will go to a project to save the lives of malnourished children in Niger.

On the final day, children will go to the Rumford Community Home to sing songs and recite Bible verses. In the evening, there will be a spaghetti supper for the children and their families. Following the supper the children will present a short program, including songs, memory verses and recaps of the week’s events.

The week of activities is open to any children in the greater Rumford area and transportation can be provided if necessary. For more information contact, Holman at 369-0746.
