LEWISTON — A local man who works as a prosecutor in Sagadahoc County is seeking the top job in the District Attorney’s Office for Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties.
Alexander Willette, 28, of Lewiston has filed the necessary papers to be on the ballot for the June 12 Republican primary. Also vying for the GOP nomination is S. Thomas Carey of Auburn.
Willette began working as an assistant district attorney in Sagadahoc County in 2015.
He served two terms in the House of Representatives in the Maine Legislature representing several towns in Aroostook County, including as minority whip during his second term.
Willette also serves as a first lieutenant in the Maine Army National Guard as a judge advocate general.
He said he hopes to bring prosecutorial practices on the mid-coast to central and western Maine counties, including taking hard stances on drunken-driving cases.
Willette said he would like to work with law enforcement departments to “help make sure we resolve cases in a way that values the contribution that they put into the case and make sure that people who do commit crimes are held accountable for the crimes they commit.”
He said he has handled all manner of cases as a prosecutor, from civil infractions to Class A felonies.
Willette said he works a a prosecutor to ensure victims play a role in the prosecution of crimes and are kept informed of criminal court proceedings.
If he is successful in capturing the Republican nomination, he would face incumbent Andrew Robinson of Farmington, who is unopposed in the Democratic primary.
Willette earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Maine at Farmington and his juris doctor at the University of Maine Law School.
