LEWISTON – For local residents looking to get exercise, meet new people or start family night where individuals at any fitness level can get exercise and have fun, area dance instructor Jaye Mendros Goulet recommends Greek dancing.

Lewiston Adult Education will offer a class in Greek dancing starting Monday, Feb. 25. Students do not need a partner, because everyone dances together in a circle. During that time, they will learn the steps of the most popular traditional Greek dances along with some Greek traditions.

By the end of the course students will be ready for “Springtime in Athens,” the annual dinner dance sponsored by Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.

Mendros Goulet will teach the class from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays. Goulet, a life-long member of the local Greek community, was part of the Greek Dance Troupe, has taught Greek dance at Lewiston High School and has worked as an instructor in the Greek school program at Holy Trinity.

The traditional steps for the most popular Greek folk dances will be taught: Syrto, Tsamiko, Hasapiko, Hasaposerviko and Garsilama. Residents may attend individually, with friends or with the family.
