LEWISTON – To kick off the Shoeworkers Oral History Project, Museum L-A will offer a continuation of the Voices lecture series with a showing of “Roughing the Uppers, The Great Shoe Strike of 1937” on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Bates College.
Produced in 1992 by the late Bates Professor Robert Branham, the film documents the Lewiston-Auburn Shoe Strike of 1937 through interviews with local historians and residents who lived through the events.
Light refreshments will be available. The event is made possible through the cooperation and support of the Harward Center for Community Partnerships, Bates College. There is no admission.
The film will be shown from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Keck classroom G52, Pettengill Hall, Bates College. Pettengill Hall, at 4 Andrews Road, is the large building with a three-story glass atrium overlooking Lake Andrews. Enter Pettengill Hall through the ground-floor or main entrance then follow the signs.
Free parking is available nearby on the campus in the “faculty and staff” parking area off College Street behind Schaeffer Theatre and on Bardwell Street off Russell Street.
Museum L-A is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history of the workers of Lewiston-Auburn and the Industrial Revolution. The museum works to preserve the heritage of the community so that future generations can learn from the culture that produced some of the world’s finest manufactured products and created a strong community.
