Sitter class

NORWAY – Stephens Memorial Hospital is announcing the last chance to take the Safe Sitter class in 2007 will be in August. There are two day classes running Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 14 and 16 and Aug. 21 and 23.

Safe Sitter (www.safesitter.org) is a medically accurate program that teaches ages 11 to 13 how to be safe, nurturing babysitters. The goal of the program is to reduce the number of avoidable and unintentional deaths among children being cared for by babysitters. Club trip

OXFORD – The Twin Town Nature Club will meet at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, in the Wal-Mart parking lot (south side near Route 26) and car pool to Bowdoin College Library to view the works of Kate Furbish (1834-1931) on the flora of Maine. Seniors cookout

WEST PARIS – The West Paris Senior Citizens will meet at noon Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the home of Bertha DeHaas, 35 Church St., for their yearly cookout and meeting.

Extension event

PARIS – The Oxford County Extension Office will have fresh vegetables and flowers at the South Paris Office, from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9. Those attending will learn about gardening, weeds and insects.

There will be tour the gardens and Karen Toohey will do a presentation on ratatouille from 4:30 to 5 p.m. Sharon Phinney will do an “Easy Herb Salad Dressing” presentation from 5:15 to 5:30. Call 1-800-287-1482 or 743-76329 to register.

Bridge play

NORWAY – The Oxford Hills Duplicate Bridge Club met on July 27 at the Fare Share Co-op. The winners in Flight A were: first, Marta Clements and Henry Deutsch; second, Adele Bendes and Les Buzzell; third, Kathy and Pete Cummings; Flight B first, Eleanor Griffin and Jim Dickens; tied for second and third, Cindy Kirchherr and Bob Kirchherr and Barbara and Paul Beegle.

Ice cream social

BETHEL – Western Mountains Senior College will join in Bethel Historical Society’s Sudbury Canada Days at an ice cream social/make-your-own sundae on the back porch of the society’s Robinson House from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11.

There will be lawn games of croquet, badminton and others and prizes awarded to senior winners. It is free for WMSC members; small donation requested from others. For more information, call 824-0508.

Guided tours

BETHEL – For the second year in a row, Bethel Historical Society life member and historian David Jones will conduct guided tours of portions of Bethel Hill Village each Saturday during August.

Jones will provide the background on the founding of the town and the reasons why people from Massachusetts, New Hampshire and southern Maine established the village in the 1770s. All walking tours will begin at 11 a.m. (rain or shine) at the fire bell tower on the north end of the village common.

Funding bench

WEST PARIS – The Bench Committee is raising funds to place a granite bench in Monument Park.

Contributors’ names will be listed in the 2007 town report. Donors may designate that the funds be in memory of someone or to honor someone and it will be noted in the report.

To donate, make checks payable to the town of West Paris, designate “park bench” and clearly write the name of the person to be remembered or honored. Mail contributions to Alta Pierce, P.O.
