Adopt a cat

NORWAY – Responsible Pet Care joins Petfinder.com and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in declaring June as Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month.

Responsible Pet Care invites the public to partake in some relaxation therapy by stopping by the shelter at 132 Waterford Road to meet available feline therapists. More than 60 cats and kittens are ready for adoption.

Responsible Pet Care is open from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Photos and cat biographies can be viewed online at www.rpc.petfinder.com.

Trail cleanup

CONWAY, N.H. – National Trails Day will be celebrated on Saturday, June 2, at the Saco Ranger Station, 33 Kancamangus Scenic Byway.

All are invited to celebrate the 15th anniversary of National Trails with the White Mountain National Forest at the Saco Ranger Station at 9 a.m. to learn about basic trail maintenance. No experience is necessary.

Trails Day brings together outdoor enthusiasts to celebrate the natural heritage of the United States trail system. Those wishing can spend a day on the trail with work gloves, hiking boots, lunch, water and rain gear to do basic maintenance, including cleaning drainage and clearing the trail corridor.

Award winner

PARIS – Samantha Brown, a senior at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, received the Lawrence Alan Spiegel Remembrance Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 at the annual meeting of the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine on May 20. Brown will major in sociology at the University of Maine in Orono in the fall.

Library speaker

WEST PARIS – John Davis will be the guest speaker at the Whitman Memorial Library at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 14.

Davis will exhibit and discuss a number of the Japanese Sakura Cherry Blossom dolls his late wife, Yoshiko, handcrafted as an instructor for the Kamakura School of Japanese Doll-Making while she was teaching the art to wives of American servicemen at military housing locations in the Yokohama area. All are welcome and light refreshments will be served.

Summer sign-up

NORWAY – Sign-up for summer events will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Monday, June 18, at the Guy E Rowe School. Programs will include the Norway Memorial Library summer reading program, Norway-Paris swim program, Western Maine youth hockey, LOOK Program, Norway-Paris Cub Scout Pack 130, the CHIPS Program sponsored by the Norway Police Department and the Masons and the KICKS Program offered by Bouchard Karate.

Norway residents of all ages can bring their bicycles to have a picture of them taken and a registration form created. It enables the police to identify a bicycle in case of theft; there is no charge for the service provided by the Norway Police Department. There will be family entertainment offered in the cafeteria from 1 to 2 p.m.

Nature trip

OXFORD – The Twin Town Nature Club will meet at 10 a.m. Monday, June 4, in the Wal-Mart parking lot and car pool to Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens at Boothbay. An entrance fee is expected. Visitors are welcome. Bring a picnic lunch. For more information, call John Crumpton at 539-2902.

Author to talk

OXFORD – Author A. Sayward Lamb, will be the speaker at the meeting of the Lake Thompson Fish and Game Club at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 7, at the clubhouse in East Oxford.

His book, “Deer Tails and Other Tales,” covers more than 60 years of hunting and fishing experiences by the author, his family and friends. Lamb will give a brief review of his book as well as talk about several other related hunting and fishing experiences that have occurred during his lifetime. All interested in hearing his stories are invited.
