LISBON FALLS – The University of Maine Cooperative Extension is offering Habitat Stewards, a volunteer education program, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on six alternate Saturdays, Sept. 8 and 22, Oct. 6 and 20 and Nov. 3 and 17, at the Androscoggin-Sagadahoc Counties Extension office.
There will be two field trips in the Lisbon area.
Participants will learn how to create and manage habitat for wildlife in yards and other places in the settled landscape.
In return for 30 hours of training, plus homework, they will volunteer 30 hours to coach others or to do a service project with a nonprofit.
Topics will include wildlife survival needs, habitat components and manageable principles, native plant species and designing the home landscape as wildlife habitat.
Class size is limited and applications must be received by Aug. 9. The fee is $75. Habitat Stewards is a volunteer program of the National Wildlife Federation and, in Maine, is a joint effort with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension.
