Church picnic

SUMNER – The Congregational Church of East Sumner will have a community picnic, barbecue and games from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, rain or shine. There will be horseshoes, face painting, balloon toss, egg races and a 50/50 raffle.

The church cookbook, “Pleasures from the Good Earth,” will be available for sale. The menu will consist of chicken, beef and veggie burgers, hot dogs, beans, chili, salads, watermelon and cold drinks.

Tents will be set up for eating; take-out will be available. Food will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. Cost is $10 individual or $25 family. For more information, call Joe or Paula at 388-2089.

Vet to speak

PARIS – Dr. Justin Schlanser, a major in the Army Veterinary Service, will talk on what the service does in the Army at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, at the Paris Hill Historical Society.

Schlanser is stationed with the 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, Ga., as a veterinarian for working dogs. He was graduated from Michigan State University Veterinary School, is airborne qualified, has completed combat divers’ school and has accompanied wounded working dogs home from Iraq.

The public is invited. The Paris Hill Historical Society is located on Tremont Street in the village of Paris Hill.

Women’s lunch

PARIS – Christian Women United will hold a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the South Paris Congregational Church. Sammie Angel of Dixfield will provide music. Call Janice at 743-5770 for reservations.

SUMNER – Everyone interested in the history of one-room schools is invited to attend the one-room school’s annual reunion at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Increase Robinson Library, Main Street East. Those having old photos are asked to bring them.

There will be tours of the library and a potluck lunch. Drinks will be provided.

Tables available

PARIS – American Legion Post 72 Auxiliary, Church Street, South Paris, will hold its annual craft fair Oct. 17 and table rental will be $10. If interested, call Lillian Herrick at 743-264.

Forms must be mailed to Lillian Herrick, 35 Paris Hill Road 14 South Paris, ME 04281. Tables will be reserved by first response.
