JAY – Detective Richard Caton and Sgt. Troy Young of the Jay Police Department recently received training in crisis negotiations at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. The Federal Bureau of Investigation taught the weeklong course.
The officers were instructed in the philosophy of crisis negotiations in hostage and non-hostage incidents. They also learned what some of the common errors are in negotiations. It was an in-depth class that provided the officers with the basic skills needed to negotiate with a hostile or out-of-control subject.
The officers would be utilized until a state police tactical team and negotiator arrived on scene. Even then, the Jay police negotiator could continue with the task of negotiating, depending on the situation.
The training is within the Jay Police Department philosophy of being a proactive department.
