Buckfield senior presented MPA award

BUCKFIELD — Seneca Jacobs of Buckfield, a senior at Buckfield Junior Senior High School, has been selected to receive the 2018 Principal’s Award, Principal George Reuter has announced. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.

“Throughout her years at Buckfield High School, Seneca has distinguished herself in the classroom, on the basketball court and as a leader in the school and the community, serving as student representative on the RSU 10 school board,” Reuter noted in making the award. “She very much deserves this recognition.”

Jacobs and other award winners and their principals attended the MPA Honors Luncheon in Bangor on April 7.

Students inducted in to NHS

SOUTH PORTLAND — Maine Connections Academy has announced local students who have been newly inducted into the school’s chapter of the National Honor Society.

The students are Alycia Jajliardo, a 12th-grader from Mt. Vernon; Ashley McCabe, a 10th-grader from Auburn; and Ella Fields, a 12th-grader also from Auburn.

To be considered for membership, students submitted a formal application and narrative, outlining their qualifications.

Hornets Walk for Hope to prevent suicide

TURNER — More than 100 people are expected to participate in Leavitt Area High School’s second annual “Out of the Darkness Campus Walk” hosted by the track team and Wellness 2 classes at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 28. The walk will consist of three one-mile loops around the campus.

The fundraising walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s local and national education and advocacy programs and its goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20 percent by 2025.

The walk is one of more than 150 Out of the Darkness Campus Walks being held nationwide. Last year, Leavitt walkers raised over $5,000.

Resources to recognize warning signs and ways to help were dispersed, and representatives from the American Foundation for the Prevention of Suicide were on-site to answer questions last year.

Bottle drive benefit for Lindsey Niblick

CARTHAGE — A bottle drive will benefit Lindsey Niblick, who has been diagnosed with Neurological Manifestations of Acute Posterior Multifocal Placoid Pigment Epitheliopathy (APMPPE).

It is a rare immune-mediated choriorentinal disease that causes eye problems, headaches, temporary hearing loss, inflammation of blood vessels wall in the brain and/or spinal cord, viral and/or bacterial meningitis and blood clots at the base of the brain.

To donate bottles, drop them off at 560 Carthage Road.
