LISBON – Maxine Shane’s fourth-grade class at Lisbon Community School opened their hearts for the holiday season.
The class had earned some extra free time for good behavior and work ethics. Ashley Veilleux suggested holding a bake sale for the homeless. The class also contributed ideas such as watching a movie or having a free recess. The students voted unanimously for the bake sale.
The sale was held Dec. 19 at the school with the help of parents who baked the goodies, then bagged them. Two parents from Shane’s room, Christine Durgin and Judy Hazelton, donated their time as well as food.
The class raised $135 for the homeless. They decided to donate the proceeds to the Hope Haven Gospel Mission in Lewiston. The Rev. Paul McLaughlin accepted the check on behalf of the mission. He complimented the class for “having big hearts.” McLaughlin told them that 165 children would receive Christmas gifts from the mission during the holiday season and the money from Shane’s fourth grade class would help in that endeavor.
