WATERVILLE — After clinching a spot in the NESCAC tournament on Friday, the Bates softball team broke the program record for wins in a season with a doubleheader sweep of Colby on Saturday, taking game one 11-3 and blanking the Mules 1-0 in game two.

Freshman Caroline Bass tallied four hits over the course of both games, giving her 50 on the year, the most in Bobcat’s (20-13) program history.

Freshman Payton Buxton went the distance to pick up the win in the circle for Bates in game one. Buxton (7-4) scattered eight hits over seven innings, allowing three runs while striking out four.

Senior Paige Ahlholm homered and Kirsten Pelletier tossed a complete game two-hitter to lead the Bobcats to a 1-0 victory in game two. Ahlholm smacked her first home run of the season and the third of her career in the top of the fourth to give the Bobcats the only run they needed in the win.

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Top-seeded Weslyean University scored six of the first seven goals and made the eighth-seeded Bates men’s lacrosse team play catchup the rest of the way, winning the NESCAC Championship quarterfinal game 16-11 Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field.

Senior Clarke Jones scored four goals and added three assist in a final powerhouse performance of his outstanding senior season. Jones finished the year on top of the NESCAC in goals scored, with a career-high 52; he is also third in points (74).

Sophomore Matt Chlastawa, the conference leader in points (96) by a margin of 18, added three goals and two assists, finishing the year with 48 goals and a team-record 48 assists, the second-most points in a seasons in pogram history.

Bates finishes the season with an 8-8 record, while the Cardinals (13-2) return to the semifinals for the fourth time in the past six seasons.
