Lewiston native to receive medal
SACO – The U.S. Army will honor Kennebunk City Letter Carrier Richard Caron, formerly of Lewiston, at the deactivation ceremony of the 2nd Battalion, 304th Regiment, with which he has served. The ceremony takes place at 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 26, at the Charles Butler USAR Center, 101 Franklin St.
A Saco resident, Caron is being awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for 30 years of service to his country with the U.S. Army Reserves. Both the division commander and the brigade commander will attend the ceremony, where the regimental colors will be retired and encased.
The reserve unit, which has been active since World War I, is being deactivated after 89 years of service, and the award to Caron will be part of the deactivation ceremony.
Caron has a 22-year career with the U.S. Postal Service and was presented with a Special Achievement Award for heroism by Kennebunk Postmaster Gerard Alexandre. As a letter carrier, Caron was cited in 2005 for going to the aid of a customer on his route who was in need of serious medical attention.
Caron is a native of Lewiston, where his family still lives. He graduated from St. Dominic’s High School in Lewiston.
