LEWISTON – The Tiny Tots room at the YWCA of Central Maine opened to accept infants and toddlers on March 13 shortly after the Smart Start Day Care closed, leaving a need for infant care.

The YWCA added 10 infant/toddler openings to its existing child care program. The new room opened 10 weeks after the close of Smart Start.

“We have a lot of people to thank for their help in getting our facility ready for the new children,” said Anne Craigs, executive director. The YWCA had a fitness room that had several pieces of equipment, but the room was underutilized. By selling the equipment and asking for contributions from patrons and friends of the YWCA, the Y was able to do the necessary construction.

“It has been a while since we had babies in our facility. The Tiny Tots room is designed for children age 1 to 2 1/2 years. We had to find specialized equipment, cribs, high chairs and toys of an appropriate age level,” said Wendy Russell, director of child care. “It was very gratifying to see everyone pull together to get the room opened in such a short time frame.”

In order to thank all those who were involved, the YWCA will hold an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 30. The program will include refreshments, tours of the facility and an explanation of the programs offered at the YWCA. The public is invited. For more information, call the YWCA at 795-4050.
