KINGFIELD – Partnership for Healthy Aging is offering “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falling” for Kingfield area residents. The program will be presented through the sponsorship of the Mt. Abram Regional Health Center and presented by SeniorsPlus.

“A Matter of Balance” will be presented at Webster Hall for eight sessions beginning Tuesday, Feb. 28. Sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays for four weeks, ending on March 23. A fee of $10 will be required, although scholarships may be available.

“A Matter of Balance” is an award-winning program developed by the Royal Center for Enhancement of Late-Life Function at Boston University. The program is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults who have concerns about falls. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall-risk factors and exercise to increase strength and balance.

Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop the fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical deconditioning, making the risk of falling greater.

Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interaction with family and friends.

“A Matter of Balance” can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent.
