Foliage run

DIXFIELD – Western Maine Street Rods 14th Annual Fall Foliage Run will take place Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8 and 9, starting at the Mountain View Campground, 206 Weld St.

The Saturday schedule starts with a noon barbecue, 2 to 4 p.m. poker run, 5 p.m. potluck supper and evening entertainment with a live band. On Sunday, participants leave the campground at 9 a.m. for the fall foliage run and lunch at Black Mountain of Maine. The cost is $12 per person. The meal includes chicken pie, lasagna and all the fixings. The group will return to the campground early to mid afternoon.

Bridge opening

BETHEL – The public is invited to join residents of Bethel to celebrate the official opening of the multi-use recreational bridge, spanning the Androscoggin River on Route 2, just east of Bethel village. The ceremony will be held around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, in the parking lot on the south side of the bridge, just adjacent to the Bethel Recreational Pathway.

Gov. John Baldacci will be featured speaker. Other dignitaries expected are Congressman Mike Michaud, State Sen. Bruce Bryant, Rep. Arlan Jodrey, Maine Department of Transportation Commissioner David Cole, representatives from both the Department of Conservation and the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and Maine Snowmobiles Association Director Bob Myers.

Harvest meal

MEXICO – A harvest supper will be served from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Mexico UCC Green Church, Main Street. The menu will include corned beef, vegetables and homemade pies. Cost for adults is $7 and children under 12, $3.

Lions recruiting

DIXFIELD – The Dixfield Lions Club is looking for new members to join them in community service projects. The club helps fund glasses for children and adults, and puts together food baskets for those in need during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, among other events.

Meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at Welch’s Campground on the Weld Road.

A public breakfast will be served at 6 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, at the campground when the Western Maine Street Rods converge for a fall foliage run.

Masons to meet

CANTON – Whitney Lodge 167, AF and AM, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at the hall. This meeting will be preceded by a casserole supper at 6:30. All master masons are welcome.

Homemakers meet

PERU – The Peru Extension Homemakers will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Peru School. Dues will be collected. Members are asked to bring a lunch and drinks will be provided.

DIXFIELD – The next Tres Dias prayer breakfast will be held at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, in the annex of Dixfield Congregational Church, High St. Coffee will be provided. For more information call 364-8083.

Quilters to meet

RUMFORD – The Rumford Area Quilters will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at the Rumford United Methodist Church, Linnell St. Those attending are requested to bring a 12-inch square either pieced or appliqued in fall colors for a drawing. No story time

DIXFIELD – There will be no children’s preschool story-time on Monday, Oct. 10, at Ludden Memorial Library due to the Columbus Day holiday. Preschool story time is held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays.

Art group meeting

RUMFORD – The next meeting of the artists’ group, Friends of Pennacook Art Center, will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, in the gallery. The agenda includes: critique/show and tell (bring in your latest work), report on the progress of the River Valley Arts Council and hints and tips on what members have learned recently that can be shared with the group.

Society session

PERU – The Peru Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the Rockemeka Grange Hall in Peru Center. All are welcome.

Speaker slated

DIXFIELD – The Dixfield Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in the Charter Meeting Room of the museum house. Peter Stowell will discuss Indians in the Androscoggin River Valley. Refreshments will be served, and the public is invited.

Computer learning

RUMFORD – The SeniorsPlus October Lunch and Learn program will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Rumford Dining Center, 50 Congress St.

Lunch will be at 11:30. Jim Boucher will give a lesson on learning about computers from using the Internet and e-mailing to word processing.

The luncheon menu includes turkey chow mein, rice, oriental vegetables, wheat roll, apple crisp and choice of coffee, tea or milk. A $2.50 donation is requested for lunch for those 60 and over, their spouses, people with disabilities and volunteers.

Parent meetings

DIXFIELD – Dirigo High School will hold Teacher/Parent/Student conferences from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12, and Thursday, Oct. 13. These conferences will be held to only 15 minutes. If you need additional time or you cannot make one of these nights, make an appointment with the teacher at a more convenient time. Call Dirigo High School Guidance office at 562-4251 as soon as possible to set up your appointments.
