TURNER – The fall/winter schedule is under way with lifelong learning opportunities at SAD 52 Adult and Community Education.
Dental assisting will be offered beginning Sept. 26. Central Maine Dental Assisting will hold the 85-hour short-term training program designed to help prepare individuals for the career. To obtain more information, call Julie at 782-5308.
Commencing Sept. 27, there will be a 160-hour CNA class that will allow participants to seek instruction in classroom, clinical and CPR. An interview must be set up with the instructor prior to the start of class. Because this program is funded by a federal grant, students may be eligible for scholarship assistance.
A basic woodworking 10-week class will begin Sept. 27. It will include safety use of all tools and equipment as well as design and construction of wood materials.
A new program this year is “Personal Finance Management,” also starting Sept. 27. The class is for individuals with a desire to define, plan and control home finances through assessment, goal-setting and strategic disciple.
“Basic Map and Compass” is a three-week class that will start Sept. 28. Learn how to navigate with the aid of a topographical map and compass. The instructor will touch briefly on the use of GPS. Students need to bring a compass to class and a time will be scheduled for outdoor practical experience.
A 16-week medical transcription class will begin Oct. 3, designed to teach all aspects of the field. Basic computer knowledge is a must, as are basic typing skills and knowledge of commonly used word processing programs. Participants who complete the course will receive a certificate of completion, letter of recommendation and a list of companies in the field with Web site addresses and phone numbers.
“CPR for Friends and Family: will be held Oct. 3. The one-night session is good for the new mom, grandparent or teen baby-sitter and contains adult CPR and choking lessons.
The NRA personal protection three-week program will begin Oct. 3, providing the basic knowledge to operate and use a handgun safely and to teach the fundamentals needed to shoot skillfully. Participants must be 18 years old to participate.
Starting Oct. 5 there will be a 16-week medical billing and coding class that will prepare participants to work in a physician’s office, hospital, medical billing company, ambulance service and nursing homes. The course requires basic computer knowledge.
A seven-week classing commencing Oct. 5 will teach 10- to 14-year-old students the responsibilities of being a baby-sitter. Learn how to supervise the play of infants and children, how to feed, dress and change infants. There will also be instructions in American Red Cross and infant and child CPR.
An American Red Cross CPR and first aid course, beginning Oct. 5 for three weeks, will provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to prove care for adults, children and infants.
A “Fun with Books” workshop is designed to help parents feel more comfortable reading to their child. Ideas will be offered to assist parents in preparing their child for later success in school at the Oct. 6 session at Leeds Central School, Oct. 13 at Greene Central and Oct. 20 at Turner Primary.
Participants can design a basket liner in a two-week class beginning Oct. 6. Learn basic machine techniques such as quilting, piping, bias and binding and how to use a ruffler.

Starting Oct. 12, a six-week program will address parenting styles, courage and self-esteem, teen behavior, problem-solving, responsibility and discipline, cooperation and communication and adolescent development. Parents will also have opportunities to practice strategies for addressing sensitive issues such as substance abuse, violence and sexuality.
