AUBURN – The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA will begin its fall aquatic programs the week of Sept. 12. The YMCA offers the following swim lesson classes: Parent and Tot, 6 to 18 months; Water Babies, 18 to 24 months; Tiny Tots, ages 2 to 5; Youth Progressive Lessons, age 6 and up; and adult swim lessons.
Parent and Tot is designed to introduce infants to the water. A parent is required to participate in the class with the child. Class is scheduled for Saturday from 8:30 to 9 and 9 to 9:30 a.m.
Water Babies is a 15-minute class catering to the timid new swimmer and has a 1:1 child/instructor ratio. Classes are held once a week from 10 to 10:15 a.m. Mondays or Wednesdays.
The Tiny Tot swim program is geared toward teaching children to swim and feel safe in and around the water. Classes are offered at various times on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings, in the afternoon on Tuesdays and Thursdays and evening classes on Monday. Advanced Tiny Tot classes are held at 7 p.m. Mondays, 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays, 10:15 a.m. Wednesdays, 1 p.m. Thursdays and 10 a.m. Saturdays. All classes run for 30 minutes.
Youth Progressive Lessons is a national YMCA swim lesson program designed to improve children’s swimming skills, teach new skills, work on endurance and stroke techniques, as well as survival skills.
Children will be placed in a class based on their swimming level as follows: Polliwog or Guppy, Tuesdays or Thursdays 6 to 6:45 p.m. or Saturdays 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.; Minnow, Tuesdays or Thursdays 6:45 to 7:30 p.m.; Fish, Tuesdays or Thursdays 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. or Saturdays 11:15 a.m. to noon; Flying Fish,Wednesdays 6 to 6:45 p.m. or Saturday 11:15 a.m. to noon; Shark, Wednesdays 6 to 6:45 p.m.
Each program runs in eight-week sessions throughout the year, with the first session from Sept. 12 to Nov. 5. Class size is limited, and registration is taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants must be YMCA members. A yearly membership for those ages 5 and under is $20; youth membership, $45. All the above classes have a $45 program fee.
Adult swim lessons are offered Fridays 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. and Wednesdays 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. Non-members must pay a $20 adult social membership fee. All participants must pay the $45 program fee for the eight-week session.
The YMCA is also holding registration for the water exercise programs. Water aerobics is a lower impact cardiovascular workout for adults of all ages.
Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. and Monday through Friday from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Water aerobic classes are free for those with a YMCA full privilege membership. Non-members must pay a $20 adult social membership fee and a $65 program fee for the eight-week session.
The YMCA also offers adult lap swim, family/open swims, Scout swims and splash parties.
