On Saturday, October 27, at 3:30 in the morning the smell of sausage and pancakes filled the air in Lisbon. No, it was not one of our local diners opening earlier than normal, it was Pack 109’s annual pancake breakfast held in the Lisbon High School’s Cafeteria. Scouts start serving people at 5 a.m. and stopped serving people at 10 a.m.

By the time the Scouts were finished serving everyone that came to the breakfast, they had gone through about 1000 pancakes, 80 pounds of sausage, 60 dozen eggs, 12 dozen biscuits, five pounds of butter, four gallons of syrup, five gallons of milk and orange juice, and 100 cups of coffee. According to one of the early morning guests, Mrs. Erline Lemke, who came to the first pancake breakfast in 1973 and has not missed one since, “The food was excellent, especially the sausage.”

This Advocate staff reporter learned this event was significant because it is the first day of hunting season and the Pancake Breakfast is one of the top fundraisers during the year for the Scouts. The funds raised go toward getting awards for the Pack and help pay for the Pack’s numerous events. This event is not just a fundraiser for Pack 109, but is one of the many ways the Cub Scouts give back to the community.
