PHILLIPS – Winona Davenport, creator of Justafield Golf Teaching Center, has begun making plans for a fund-raiser to take place during the annual Phillips Old Home Days celebration.

A yard sale will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 18, at the field located across from Ron’s Texaco on Route 4. The sale will benefit Golf Opportunities for Children, a program that provides clubs for children and brief instruction for those interested in learning to play golf.

Along with the usual yard sale items, Davenport will have a special sale of her book published in 1986, “Phillips Through My Eyes.” The regular price for the book is $16.95, but for this event the cost will be $12 with $9 from each sale going toward junior golf.

Following the sale the field will be available from 1 to 6 p.m. that day for anyone who would like to visit and participate in games similar to those last year.

Following the day’s activities and, weather permitting, Doug Lisherness will fly over the field with his parasail and one passenger, who will drop golf balls at a specific target. Anyone who is interested in participating may purchase a golf ball for $5 from Davenport and have a number put on the ball that will be recorded in a booklet with the name. The ball landing closest to the center of the target will be the winner and will receive a cash prize.

For $2 golfers may play anytime up to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, and turn in their scorecard to Davenport, who will put it into a drawing. The winner will be notified and may ride in the parasail with Lisherness and drop the balls or the winner may designate someone else to ride in their place.

In case of bad weather an alternate time for the ball drop will be announced on Friday evening following the Old Home Week parade.

Currently the field is hosting nine children from Halfway Down the Stairs Child Care at 9:30 a.m. every Tuesday.

Davenport is an associate member of the U.S. Golf Teachers Federation and welcomes all to stop by and say hello. Anyone wishing to help that day may contact her at 639-4296 to leave a message.
