LEWISTON – The transition from pre-school to kindergarten has been made easier for children because of a collaborative effort between Androscoggin Head Start and Child Care and school departments in Lewiston and Auburn.

Meetings were held between educators from Lewiston and Auburn and Head Start to discuss ways to assist children as they graduate from their Head Start pre-school program and move into the public school system.

Throughout the year, classroom teachers at Head Start complete evaluations of the student, which are shared with the child’s parents. Head Start representatives coordinate with an educator from the school that the child will enter to make the jump to kindergarten successful.

The meetings bring about increased cooperation between the pre-school and kindergarten teachers. They also make the transition easier on the child and their family.

Applications for Head Start programs are accepted at any time. Most programs are free to eligible children. Full-day child care services are available on a sliding fee scale for parents who are working, continuing their education or participating in job training.
