LEWISTON – Ten community leaders, who have agreed to form the nucleus of the leadership for the Garcelon Society of Bates College, met June 16 with Bates President Elaine Tuttle Hansen at a breakfast organizing meeting at her house on the Bates campus.
The Garcelon Society is working to raise $500,000 from local businesses and individuals in support of scholarship support for Lewiston-Auburn area students who attend Bates. So far, more than $90,000 has been raised for the Androscoggin Scholarship Fund at Bates.
Attending were Barbara M. Trafton, Garcelon Society chairwoman; Lewiston Mayor Lionel Guay; James X.F. Wellehan, president of Lamey-Wellehan Shoes; Jon Oxman, attorney, Linnell, Choate and Weber; Judith Magyar Isaacson; Dick Kendall, chairman, Maine Ventures Inc.
Also, Chip Morrison, president, Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce; Elaine Hansen; Lee Griswold, owner, Hilton Garden Inn; John Isaacson, CEO, Lee Auto Malls; Auburn Mayor Norm Guay; John Cole, attorney, Skelton, Taintor and Abbott; and Irving Isaacson, partner, Brann and Isaacson.
