LEWISTON – The “Super Saturday” free tax preparation event on Feb. 12 was a great success, said officials. Hosted at Andover College and sponsored by the Lewiston-Auburn Tax Credit Awareness Coalition, a total of 93 federal/state tax returns were e-filed for low- and moderate-income workers.

Carolyn Nash, an attendee, said, “This was the most pleasant part of my whole week. The tax preparer who did my returns was upbeat, smiling and simply amazing.” All volunteer tax preparers had undergone training and received certification from the Internal Revenue Service.

The event was part of an ongoing effort to inform residents about the Earned Income Tax Credit, a federal benefit that many workers are not aware they are eligible for. For 2004 returns, eligible individuals may receive up to $4,300.

Asset building information was also available with representatives from Community Credit Union, Key Bank, Coastal Enterprises and the Maine Center for Financial Education.

Mark Millar, of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, which funds the tax season awareness effort, spoke with several individuals who were seeking positive ways to utilize their refunds for the betterment of their future.

The coalition continues to offer free tax prep opportunities through mid-March at Hillview, Lewiston, Family Development Center, Auburn, and the B Street Community Center, Lewiston. Interested residents are encouraged to call 784-2951, ext. 109, for an appointment.
