AUBURN – The Auburn Bahai community has been holding regular weekly devotional gatherings for a number of years, rain or shine, at the Rohanis’ home.

People come together, regardless of religious background or belief, for prayer, fellowship and unity. Last year participants took on a service project in the community that everyone could join. They decided to help the American Red Cross chapter, East Avenue, Lewiston, in gathering items and assembling comfort kits for adults, teens and children.

The kits contain hygiene items, toys, games and books for adults, teens and children who have been affected by a loss – usually a loss of residence as a result of a natural disaster or fire. The local Red Cross chapter estimates that it gives 100 kits each year to families.

During the weekly gatherings, announcements for the effort were made and attendees who wished brought items to donate. Ase McKay of Lisbon donated 15 handmade baby blankets and quilts. After months of collecting, participants gave their donation to the Red Cross recently.

“The contributions we made vocalize our spiritual commitment to service,” said Ideh Rohani, a Bahai and co-host of the Thursday gatherings. “The Bahai Faith speaks highly of service. It is our moral responsibility to look out for the welfare of others and be of service to humanity – by humanity, I mean not only our family, friends and neighbors, but even those we do not know and have not met.”
