ATLANTA – Toyota and the National Science Teachers Association awarded Beth Chagrasulis, a science teacher from Lake Region High School in Naples, a Toyota Tapestry grant of $9,924 for excellence and innovation in science education for her program, titled “DNA Past, Present and Future.”

Chagrasulis was one of 50 U.S. teachers to receive the grant on April 1 at the association’s national convention in Atlanta.

High school students at Lake Region High School will explore molecular biology and genetics concepts this fall. After extracting DNA from strawberries and cloning African violets, the students will research scientists involved in DNA history.

Additional research topics will include genetically modified foods, stem cells and cloning. Group discussions and case studies will reinforce the learning process. The project will make real-world connections that are critical for today’s youth.

“Beth’s program is an innovative way to teach life science and literacy,” said Michael Rouse, corporate manager of philanthropy and community affairs for Toyota. “By providing authentic scientific experiences, this program exemplifies the spirit of the Toyota Tapestry grant, which is to foster novel ways of presenting science.”

Chagrasulis has spent the last seven years as a teacher at Lake Region High School.
