Humane Society board to collect food, supplies for animals Saturday at Shaw’s Supermarkets.
AUBURN – Board members and volunteers of the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society will be at the Shaw’s Supermarkets in Lewiston and Auburn on Saturday, Nov. 22, collecting donations of pet food and supplies. Cash donations will also be accepted.
The shelter relies heavily on the donations by the community of food and supplies for the animals that it cares for. More than 60 pounds of dog food and 40 pounds of cat food are needed daily to feed the nearly 3,600 animals who pass through the shelter’s doors.
Members of the society’s board of directors and volunteers will be at the two stores from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drop boxes for pet food, supplies and cash donations also will be available at both stores until Dec. 24.
The Humane Society provides a safe haven for homeless and abused animals in the Androscoggin area. The primary support for the shelter comes from fund-raising events and donations.
The shelter gives back through community services, including animal intake and adoption, animal health services, reuniting people with lost animals, humane education and working with individuals who are disadvantaged or developmentally disabled.
The Humane Society, 3312 Hotel Road, is in the middle of a capital campaign to build a new shelter. If interested in helping to build a shelter, call 786-4713. Anyone interested in volunteering at the shelter or adopting an animal can visit the shelter or visit the Web site at www.gahumane.org.
