LEWISTON – The following is a sampling of the new books received at the Lewiston Public Library in the last month:
Fiction
“Beachcomber” by Karen Robards. From Philadelphia to North Carolina’s Outer Banks, from the Mafia to a serial killer, Christy Petrino finds trouble wherever she goes in this romantic suspense novel.
“The Footprints of God” by Greg Iles. Dr. David Tennant is working on a secret government project with other top scientists, attempting to build a supercomputer with more power than the human mind when a fellow scientist is murdered and David has to run for his life.
“Last Lessons of Summer” by Margaret Maron. When Amy Steadman learns that she is heir to a fortune after her grandmother is murdered, she returns to her grandmother’s North Carolina home to sort things out and finds there are a lot of unanswered questions about many things, including her own mother’s apparent suicide 27 years before.
“Love Me” by Garrison Keillor. Larry Wyler’s meteoric fame as a best-selling novelist is short-lived as he is forced to return to Minnesota from the glitter of New York City and, desperate for work, accepts a newspaper job writing an advice column for the lovelorn.
“Personality” by Andrew O’Hagan. 13-year-old singing sensation, Maria Tambini, finds out that celebrity status comes at a great personal price.
“Saturn” by Ben Bova. 10,000 people have embarked on a two-year journey from Earth to Saturn aboard a giant space habitat, and a small group of these people will not let anything stand in their way in their quest to gain control of the habitat.
“Secret Father” by James Carroll. It’s 1961 in Germany as three American teenagers living in Frankfurt with their parents decide to take off on a trip to East Berlin without their parents’ knowledge, only to be detained by East German police on false charges that may have far-reaching consequences.
Theater of the Stars” by N.M. Kelby. Lucienne Kundera, an astrophysicist living near Boston, travels to Paris with her French-born mother to accept an award for her work about black holes; while there her mother tries to commit suicide and a flood of long-hidden secrets start to reveal themselves.
Nonfiction
“Absolute Beginner’s Guide to E-Bay” by Michael Miller. The author walks the reader through the process of selling or bidding on an item on E-Bay, the world’s largest online auction site.
“Country Living Home Almanac” by John Gates. A month-by-month and season-by-season guide to house maintenance and renovation.
“Farley” by James King. The biography of Farley Mowat a well-known Canadian author who has trekked the length and breadth of Canada.
“The New Book of Apples” by Joan Morgan. A history of apples, advice on cooking and growing them and a survey of 2,000 varieties worldwide.
“Our Stories Remember” by Joseph Bruchac. This Native American author explains the importance of storytelling in American Indian culture.
“Out of the Blue” by John Naylor. Did you ever wonder why the sky is blue or why sunsets are red or why the moon is sometimes visible during the day? Find out in this 24-hour skywatcher’s guide.
“Ship Ablaze” by Edward O’Donnell. The little-known story of one of New York City’s greatest disasters – a steamboat fire that killed more than 1,000 people in 1904.
