LEWISTON – Lewiston artist Rachel Steenburn is the featured artist for September at the Visiting Artist Gallery at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

Steenburn studied art since childhood and attended Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven. She earned her bachelor’s degree in art education. Although formally educated in art, her talent, she believes, is a gift from God.

She has been teaching art to children and adults with developmental disabilities for the past 20 years. She is employed by John F. Murphy Homes in the Essentially Art Program at “The Shop” in Auburn.

Steenburn, her husband, Jeff, and daughter, Sarah, moved to Maine in 1989 and have made their home in Lewiston. She believes that moving to Maine was the best thing they could have done.

Steenburn said people in Maine are the best, and with each new season, there are so many things to see and do. Her favorite things to paint are Maine seascapes, children and animals.

Steenburn has been painting in watercolor for about 10 years. She has been taking adult education courses and workshops from local artists, including Marge Schuler, Bob Drewal, Marj DiRenzo and Irene Rothe. She began to exhibit her work in the past couple of years at area art shows and hospitals.
