BRUNSWICK – The Chamberlain Civil War Round Table will hold its first meeting of the year at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Brunswick Junior High School cafeteria. The speaker will be Paul Ledman, author of “A Maine Town Responds,” an in-depth study of how a northern town responded to the increasing demands for manpower over the course of the Civil War.
At the time of the Civil War, the town of “Cape Elizabeth” included the entire area of present day South Portland and Cape Elizabeth. It was populated primarily by farmers and folks who made their living by the sea. Utilizing municipal records, local newspapers and military documents, the author examines how the Civil War changed their lives forever.
Ledman is a resident of Cape Elizabeth and has had a varied career in oceanography, practiced law, owned several businesses and is now teaching high school in Cape Elizabeth.
The meeting will be preceded by a 9/11 remembrance presentation by members Arthur Frederiksen and Arthur Schade.
