LEWISTON – Temple Shalom Synagogue-Center’s Hebrew School begins a new year of study on Tuesday, Sept. 7, with a festive dinner for students and their families.
The Hebrew School teaches Hebrew, prayer, Bible, and other aspects of Jewish history and religion to children through seventh grade, and begins to prepare them for Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies, which they celebrate at age 13. The school meets from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays.
“A family does not need to join the synagogue in order to send their child to Hebrew School, although we certainly encourage it,” explained Rabbi Hillel Katzir, spiritual leader of the synagogue and principal of the school. “We also welcome students who have one parent who is Jewish and another parent who is of another faith. We want to encourage those students and their families to explore the Jewish part of their heritage.”
For further information, Katzir can be contacted at Temple Shalom, or call 786-4201 or e-mail [email protected]
