LEWISTON – Vision problems affect one in four school children, according to the American Optometric Association. Basic vision screening with the distance vision chart misses many conditions that need professional examination by an eye specialist. The Family Eye Health and Contact Lens Center, 220 Sabattus St., will offer free expanded vision screening during August. Trained technicians will offer screening to all school children in the area.

Dr. Reginald Mailhot, local optometrist, said, “The Muskie School of Public Service recently concluded that expanded vision screening is 40 percent more effective than the current school vision screening for finding vision problems that need to be assessed by an optometrist or other eye specialist.”
