PARIS – Renee Wales will begin her work as director of religious education on Sunday, Oct. 3, at the First Universalist Church, 36 Pine St., South Paris, as she leads the opening of the Sunday school for this church year. All children are invited. Marilyn Hammond will lead the 10 a.m. service. Her sermon will be “It Matters What We Believe.” The music will be under the direction of Forest Perkins, church organist. Sunday school will be in session and child care is provided. Coffee hour will follow in Good Cheer Hall. All welcome.

Marshals on scene

FRYEBURG – The State Fire Marshal’s office announces that from Oct. 3 to 10 they will be on the Fryeburg Fairgrounds to answer questions. One theme a day has been chosen to be highlighted and discussed. Daily demonstrations with accelerant, canine dogs, correct window sizes for private and rental units, correct dimensions for chimney blocks and protective covers for outside oil tanks will be shown. A daily give-away for a smoke detector will be held, and kids can enter for daily prizes in the coloring and home exit drill contest. There will be one prize for each age group.

Knitting guild

PARIS – Western Maine Knitting Guild will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the First Congregational Church, South Paris. Members should bring yarn and needles to use for the learning stitch program. New members and guests are welcome. For more information, call 743-7677.

Applications out

BUCKFIELD – Applications are out at local town offices for the 2004 Christmas season for residents of Buckfield, Hartford and Sumner. Applications must be returned by Nov. 1.

Tables available

PARIS – The sixth annual Craft Fair at Market Square Health Care Center will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13. Craft tables are available for $10 a table. Reserve tables by Nov. 11. Call the Activity Department at 743-7086.
