LEWISTON – Thomas Memorial Baptist Church, 62 Strawberry Ave., has begun a 13-week program, “Divorce Care for Kids,” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays.
All children ages 5 to 12 who are experiencing separation or divorce are invited to participate.
A light supper will be provided. There will be a one-time fee of $15 for a workbook. Participants may go through the program more than once, and there will be no additional fee.
The children will meet other peers who are experiencing similar situations, and they will be able to help each other in the healing process.
The group meeting will consist of activities such as watching a video, story time, art and physical activities and a time to share.
The program deals with such themes as anger, sadness and forgiveness. The topics correlate with those discussed in the adult Divorce Care sessions so that parents and their children can connect and bond.
For the last four years, Thomas Memorial Baptist Church has sponsored Divorce Care, an adult support and recovery program.
The added kids program will give parents and children the necessary skills to communicate about such issues as financial problems, loneliness and depression. It will teach children that divorce is not their fault, and it will give them coping skills to deal with the negativity and teach them how to put things in a more positive light.
