BETHEL – Police continued their investigation into the death of a 25-year-old Raymond landscaper on Friday, one week after the man was found dead in a car struck by a train.
The Medical Examiner’s Office has completed an autopsy on the body of Scott Libby, but the cause of his death is still pending.
Libby’s compact Chevrolet Cobalt was parked on the railroad tracks about 200 feet west of the Barker Road crossing when it was struck from behind by a westbound freight train shortly before 3 a.m. Feb. 20. The car was pushed 850 feet down the track.
The manager of the Bethel Hostel said police questioned one of the guests at the hostel, who he said punched Libby in the head a couple of times when the two met not long before Libby’s car was struck. The manager said the guest had worked for Libby during the summer and the incident occurred after the settlement of a loan Libby had given the man.
Chief Mike Jodrey of the Bethel Fire Department said there was a slow order for trains due to weather conditions last Friday, and the car was not extensively damaged.
Chief Alan Carr of the Bethel Police Department said Libby’s injuries appeared to be greater than would be expected from such a crash.
