PARIS – Two Norway men received deferred sentences Monday after pleading guilty to drug charges in the Oxford County Superior Court.
Kevin Scott Hamlin, 41, of 7 King St., pleaded guilty to an information of Class C unlawful trafficking in cocaine. The plea agreement dismissed two counts of Class B unlawful trafficking in cocaine, one count of Class D unlawful possession of cocaine, and three counts of Class E operating after suspension.
According to a police report by officer Theron Bickford of the Norway Police Department, police made two controlled buys of cocaine from Hamlin at his home. Bickford states that Hamlin’s license to operate a motor vehicle was suspended, but police saw him driving to another location to pick up the cocaine.
Justice John Nivison sentenced Hamlin to serve a one-year deferred disposition, during which he must refrain from criminal conduct, not use or possess illegal drugs, submit to searches by law enforcement, and have no contact with 28-year-old Heath W. Edwards of 63 Cottage St. If Hamlin successfully completes the disposition, he may plead to a misdemeanor drug possession charge and pay a $500 fine.
Edwards pleaded guilty to an information of Class C unlawful furnishing of cocaine and admitted a criminal forfeiture of $818. Edwards was indicted in June on a charge of Class A aggravated trafficking in cocaine.
Edwards was one of four people arrested after police raided an apartment on Cottage Street and seized 27 grams of cocaine, scales, packaging materials, nine cell phones, and other items. Assistant Attorney General David Fisher said the $818 was found in Edwards’ sock.
Nivison sentenced Edwards to serve a one-year deferred disposition, during which he must not use or possess illegal drugs, have no contact with his co-defendants, and pay $800 in restitution to the Norway Police Department. If he successfully completes the disposition, Edwards may plead to a misdemeanor drug possession charge, pay a $400 fine, and serve a fully suspended five-month jail sentence with one year of probation.
Dennis Garey, 27, of Waterford; Cheryl L. Thompson, 43, of Norway; and David J. Thompson, 45, of Harrison were also arrested in the raid and received deferred dispositions after pleading to reduced charges.
Edwards was also indicted in June on counts of Class B unlawful trafficking in cocaine, Class E violation of conditions of release, and the criminal forfeiture of a 1992 Ford Explorer in relation to Hamlin’s case. According to a police report, Edwards told a confidential informant that he was purchasing cocaine from Massachusetts and allowing Hamlin to use his vehicle to transport the drugs.
According to court documents, those charges against Edwards will be dismissed.
