OXFORD – The discovery of more than 50 marijuana plants, prescription drugs and a rifle on Wednesday led to the arrest of a Coldwater Brook Road man.

Joseph Bennett, 31, was arrested by drug agents on a charge of aggravated cultivation of marijuana. He was booked at the Oxford County Jail before he was released Thursday.

Investigators said Maine Drug Enforcement agents aided by Oxford and state police found more than 50 marijuana plants ranging in size from 6 inches to 4 feet tall at Bennett’s home.

MDEA Supervisor Gerry Baril said agents served a search warrant at Bennett’s 139 Coldwater Brook Road home after townspeople complained about suspected marijuana trafficking there.

Found growing in buckets behind the home were 56 marijuana plants, and another three plants inside the house, Baril said. Also seized from the home were more than 500 pills of assorted prescription drugs, a digital scale and a .22-caliber rifle.

Baril said the street value of the seized marijuana is roughly $50,000. Agents plan to analyze pills discovered at Bennett’s home, for which he did not have a prescription.
