PARIS – A florist is counting her blessings after a collapsing roof resulted in neither injuries nor any disturbance to the holiday bustle.
Theresa Clifton, owner of Littlefield’s Flowers and Gifts on Main Street, said the roof of the greenhouse, which is connected to the business’s gift shop, came down at noon on Wednesday.
“It sounded like a train coming through. It was that loud,” said Clifton, one of five workers in the gift shop during the incident. “And it was over in seconds.”
Clifton said there were propane heaters on the floor to heat the building and melt snow off the roof, but believes snow and ice accumulated too quickly during Wednesday’s storm for the heaters to keep up.
“We’re very blessed that none of our workers were out there,” said Clifton.
Clifton said the business had not started its regular process of putting delivery orders into the greenhouse, and said the collapse would have affected well over 300 Valentine’s Day bouquets if it had occurred at night.
While the falling roof did destroy or damage some supplies in the greenhouse, such as benching, furniture, and vases, no orders were affected.
With the staging area lost, preparation for the deliveries was transferred to the neighboring Paris Kitchen and Bath business, which is run by Theresa’s husband, Don Clifton.
“We’ve been doing fine, because most of our customers come into the gift shop anyway,” said Theresa.
She did not have a damage estimate, but said the greenhouse is insured.
