PARIS – An Oxford County Superior Court justice denied a request Wednesday to reduce bail for a Rumford man charged with attempted murder.

Robert E. Crowley set bail at $20,000 cash or $100,00 security saying the crime was too serious and the risk of flight too great to reduce bail for Alvah Burton Pike IV of 26 Spruce St.

Pike pleaded not guilty in Oxford County Superior Court on Tuesday to attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault and aggravated assault. He is accused of repeatedly stabbing 28-year-old Joshua Lee Mayo of Oxford Avenue in Rumford with a switchblade knife after the two got in an argument on the way to Mayo’s apartment from a Mexico restaurant on Sept. 24.

Pike’s previous convictions include assault in 2000 and 2004, and aggravated assault last year.

Pike said he acted in self defense and dislocated a shoulder during the fracas.

Crowley ordered that Pike, who has been in jail since his arrest, have no contact with Mayo and not possess weapons, illegal drugs or alcohol.
